On Tuesday the World Energy Council (WEC) published its Energy Sustainability Index. 60 data sets were examined in the report for 129 countries with an emphasis on the following standards: discovering secure, affordable, and environmentally sustainable sources of energy – which the WEC refers to as the world’s trilemma. According to the index Canada has moved up several spots to sixth place, ranking ahead of Australia and the US.
Historically, Canada has been criticized for its high per capita energy consumption. Moreover, the oilsands is not particularly praised for its environmental footprint record. Overall Canada performed well in terms of energy security and affordability but has room to improve when it comes to environmental sustainability.
